Coming up at the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library on Friday May 30th from 6 – 8 pm.m is “Mapping Early California” featuring John Johnson, PhD, Curator Emeritus, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History & Jennifer Colby, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Department of Liberal Studies at California State University, Monterey Bay.

This program examines the history and traditions of mapping in early Spanish and Mexican colonial California, including before, during, and after the Mission Period. Dr. Johnson will cover the earliest depictions of the Santa Barbara region and what information can be derived about Chumash settlement patterns from archival records. Dr. Colby will examine the artistic traditions behind the diseños, maps that were filed with petitions for land grants in the Mexican Period.
