Celebrating Cinematic Arts: Gustavo Arellano on Gabriel Figueroa

April 12, 2025

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel

During Santa Barbara International Film Festival (February 4th – 15th), El Encanto is launching a cinematic speaker series, where guests and locals alike can participate in intimate and engaging discussions with interesting thought leaders in the film, arts and culture world.

American Journalist Gustavo Arellano will host The Cinematic Murals of Gabriel Figueroa from 10 am to noon on Saturday, April 12th.

Regarded as Mexico’s fourth muralist, Gabriel Figueroa defined the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema by capturing the essence and aesthetic through chiaroscuro and creating beauty from tragedy as seen in films such as Enamorada (1946), Los Olvidados (1951) Macario (1960) and The Night of the Iguana (1964). A film screening of John Huston’s Night of the Iguana, the film that earned Figueroa his only Academy Award nomination, will follow at The Riviera Theater, adjacent to the hotel.
