Your Guide to a Santa Barbara Beach Wedding

You have the ring, the partner and a dream of a beach wedding. Now comes the logistics. Whether you’re envisioning an intimate elopement or a grand celebration on the sands of Santa Barbara, use this guide to lock in the details so you can focus on the ocean view and that special someone standing across from you.

Pick Your Beach

Finding the right wedding spot is about matching the site to your vision and guest needs. While every oceanside location is spectacular, guest capacity, noise and alcohol permits, and proximity to hotels and reception venues vary by location.

California beaches fall under a patchwork of jurisdictions, including city, county and state park authorities. Santa Barbara County-managed beaches do not allow weddings directly on the sand, though ceremonies are allowed at designated reservable areas overlooking the water.

In the city of Santa Barbara, beach wedding sites are coordinated through City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation and require a permit. Couples can choose between East Beach and Leadbetter Beach, both set against the Pacific’s sparkling blue horizon and minutes from popular places to stay.

East Beach

East Beach along Cabrillo Boulevard is known for its expansive, flat sands and walkability to waterfront restaurants and hotels. East Beach Calle Puerto Vallarta near the photo-worthy Chromatic Gate accommodates 150 guests and issues alcohol and amplified-sound permits, creating a one-stop option for both ceremony and celebration. Located east of Milpas Street, East Beach Cabrillo West offers similar salt-kissed breezes and permits with a capacity for 200 and convenient proximity to the Cabrillo West parking lot.

East Beach Pavilion Beach near the 1926 landmark Cabrillo Pavilion hosts ceremonies and receptions for up to 100. For larger gatherings, the Cabrillo Pavilion Event Center blends historical charm with a coastal horizon, accommodating 200 guests. Along with its signature Spanish Revival aesthetic, a reservation grants exclusive use of the beach directly in front of the venue.

Leadbetter beach

For a seaside ceremony without sandy toes, the Leadbetter Ceremony Area features a grassy, manicured lawn framed by a crown of palms and the Pacific’s white-capped waves. Located between the Santa Barbara Harbor and Shoreline Park, this west-end gem hosts up to 60 of your closest friends and family. For a low-key reception, reserve the adjoining picnic area — perfect for a sunset cookout or food trucks. Amplified noise is prohibited, while beer and wine are permitted with a reservation.

Embrace the Elements

The magic of a beach wedding lies in its atmosphere, yet the very things that make it beautiful — the soft sand and open skies — require some planning. Research Santa Barbara’s annual weather patterns, including the path of the sun, to see how it might impact your photos or the guest experience. Luckily, Santa Barbara enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year, making a rainy wedding day a rare worry. Pro tip: A dress code that prioritizes guest comfort on the sand is a thoughtful move.

If getting hitched on the sand isn’t quite your thing, but you still crave a sweeping ocean landscape, consider some beach-adjacent venues like Palm Park Beach House, Shoreline Park East or Casa Las Palmas. For a small, intimate gathering, Lookout Park in Summerland, reserved through the county, offers dramatic seaside cliffs as your backdrop.

Secure a Permit

Visit the Parks and Recreation wedding website to check availability from 12 to 18 months in advance, depending on the location, and to submit an application for a permit. Applications require event details, including estimated guest counts, event duration and plans for amplified sound, food and alcohol. The city also asks for an optional description of proposed decorations and setup.

Obtain a Marriage License

Before saying “I do” in Santa Barbara, couples must obtain a California marriage license. First, submit an application online. Then, visit the Santa Barbara County Clerk-Recorder’s office together within seven days to finalize the paperwork and purchase your license. Once the license is issued, it remains valid for 90 days, giving you three months to tie the knot.

Beyond the wedding itself, there are plenty of options for nearby reception venues and complimentary planning services are available to help secure hotel room blocks.
