Experience a powerful reimagining of Shakespeare’s world with a screening of Hamnet (2025), directed by Chloé Zhao. Centered on Agnes (Jessie Buckley), a woman deeply attuned to the natural world, the film traces her life with William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) from quiet beginnings to profound loss. Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, the story offers an intimate lens on grief, creativity, and the emotional origins behind Hamlet, exploring how personal tragedy can shape enduring art.
Presented by the Carsey-Wolf Center in conjunction with the UCSB Library exhibition Infinite Variety: The Many Lives of Shakespeare’s Texts, the evening expands beyond the screen with thoughtful conversation before and after the film. Scholar Jean Feerick (John Carroll University) joins moderator Jim Kearney (UCSB) for discussions that explore the film’s themes and its connection to Shakespeare’s life and legacy.
This screening includes both pre- and post-film discussions.
