History of Cabrillo Pavilion

In the late 1920s, shortly after an earthquake transformed the city, Roland Sauter and E. Keith Lockard designed Cabrillo Pavilion with funding from local philanthropist David Gray. Gray’s goal was for the space to be used for local park and recreation services. Considered one of the greatest examples of a municipal public recreation facility in California, it’s become an anchor in the community and has helped establish East Beach as one of the top beach destinations in the area, which has hosted dozens of volleyball tournaments, triathletes and other athletic events over the years.
