Located 15 minutes north of downtown Santa Barbara, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, lies El Capitan Canyon, an incredible resort secluded amongst ancient sycamores opening onto El Capitan Beach. The Canyon offers a unique experience – one that is close to nature, but with a level of comfort that is unsurpassed in the realm of outdoor recreating.
Cabins and Camping at El Capitan Canyon
El Capitan Canyon offers three types of elevated, resort-style camping accommodations including cedar cabins, an adventure yurt and two safari tents.
The cedar cabins at El Capitan are fully furnished cabins that showcase vaulted ceilings and French doors that open to views of a running creek. These cabins are complete with king, queen or double beds, a full bath, wet bar, mini-fridge, central heat, linens, grill private outdoor fire pit. The cabins vary in size and bedding arrangements, making them ideal for families, small groups, and couples.
For visitors who want to go glamping – El Capitan Canyon offers their adventure yurt. Accommodating up to four people, the yurt includes a domed skylight (perfect for stargazing at night), a queen bed and twin day bed with a trundle, linens, mini-fridge, and microwave. Outside of the yurt, you’ll find a bathhouse, picnic table and firepit.
Lastly, El Capitan Canyon has safari tents, which are great for visitors seeking a more traditional camping experience with some of the comforts of home. There are two tent types available at the resort – Safari Tent Queen (one queen bed) and Safari Tent Double (two double beds). The tents are built on raised wooden decks and have screened windows and zip-down flaps. They’re also supplied with amenities, both indoor and outdoor, that are similar to those at the adventure yurt.
Activities, Dining and Other Resort Activities
El Capitan Canyon offers a variety of activities for guests including outdoor activities, dining and seasonal events.
Leading from the resort, guests will find 15 miles of private hiking trails that take hikers along the Central Coast. The most popular trail – Selma Rubin Trail – takes visitors to the llama and goat farm. There are also several more advanced trails. For those who would rather bike than hike, El Capitan Canyon provides adult beach cruises to all guests, free of charge. These can be used to explore the resort and surrounding areas. There is also a heated swimming pool and children’s playground on the canyon’s grounds.
For supplies during your stay, El Capitan Canyon has the Canyon Market. This market is completely different from your typical campground store. Here guests can find Santa Barbara wines, candles, organic eats, sunscreen and outdoor/adventure products. The market also offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner for dine-in or take-out as well as BBQ Kits to cook at your campsite.
Other activities include spa services, seasonal jazz and dinner concerts and wine tastings. Guests can also book Canyon Adventures such as backcountry hiking excursions, mountain biking, ocean kayaking and surf fishing through the resort.

The resort’s 350 acres make it an ideal location for a wedding, family reunion, corporate retreat, or other big events.
