Celebrate the finale of the 17th annual Asian American Film Series with a special screening of The Mochi Movie, directed by Sky Bergman, at the historic Alhecama Theatre. Exploring the centuries-old Japanese tradition of Mochi-tsuki—the ceremonial pounding of rice to make mochi for the New Year—the film examines themes of resilience, identity, and intergenerational connection through stories that honor the enduring power of cultural traditions.
Featuring appearances by cultural icon George Takei, Japanese American National Museum curator Kristen Hayashi, and the story of renowned photographer Toyo Miyatake, The Mochi Movie brings together voices across generations in a moving celebration of heritage and community.
Following the screening, guests are invited to stay for a Q&A with director Sky Bergman and an outdoor reception. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated, and admission is free for SBTHP members.
