A 3-Day Guide to the Santa Barbara Half Marathon

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is one of the country’s most scenic race destinations. Come for the Santa Barbara Half Marathon (Nov. 8), then stick around to experience the city’s acclaimed food scene, coastal beauty, Spanish Colonial architecture and laid-back California charm.

Whether you fly into Santa Barbara Airport or follow the scenic California coast from Los Angeles by car or train, here’s how to make the most of your race weekend in Santa Barbara.

Where to Stay

Stay close to the race by spending your nights in a beachfront hotel steps from the water or at a State Street hotel within easy reach of shops and dining. Both options put you just a short walk from the start line, making race morning that much easier.

From boutique hotels and luxurious resorts to charming neighborhood inns, Santa Barbara offers a wide range of accommodations. Before booking your stay and activities, be sure to check out the special offers available during your visit.

Day 1

Morning

Gather at Palm Park Festival for a morning group shakeout run, followed by a yoga session to loosen up before race day. While you’re there, pick up your race packet. (Packet pickup is at Santa Barbara Palm Park on Friday, Nov. 6, from 2-6 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) If you’d rather prepare on your own, head out for a run along Santa Barbara’s trails. Shorter routes include Ellwood Mesa and More Mesa, while longer paths take you along the Santa Barbara Waterfront and Obern Trail.

Afternoon

In the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara, the ARTS District is a fun place to spend a few hours, with locally owned boutiques, theaters and galleries around nearly every corner. Stop for lunch at one of the neighborhood’s restaurants, then, if you’re up for a little adventure, head to Paddle Sports Center or Santa Barbara Adventure Company to rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Once you’re on the water, you’ll see Santa Barbara from a whole new perspective as you glide along the coastline.

Evening

A visit to Santa Barbara isn’t complete without a waterfront dinner. Head to Brophy Bros. Clam Bar & Restaurant, a beloved local favorite serving fresh seafood overlooking the harbor. Start with steaming clam chowder or garlic-baked clams before biting into crispy fish and chips.

Day 2

Morning

Rise and shine for race day! The Santa Barbara Half Marathon starts at 7 a.m. sharp at the intersection of State Street and Cabrillo Boulevard. Give yourself plenty of time to walk or bike from your accommodation, warm up and find your place in the lineup before the starting gun goes off. A bike valet will be available from 6 a.m. to noon at Yanonali and Santa Barbara streets in the Funk Zone.

You’ll start with an early climb along the waterfront before settling into a scenic, mostly flat route along Cabrillo Boulevard, where spectators line the course to cheer runners on. The course then winds through Downtown Santa Barbara before a fast downhill finish at the State Street Promenade. After you’ve collected your finisher’s medal, make your way to the Funk Zone Festival, where live music and local food await along Yanonali Street between State and Santa Barbara streets.

If a late breakfast sounds good, reward yourself with a cheesy hash brown-stuffed breakfast taco at Helena Avenue Bakery to replenish those hard-earned carbs. Then, raise a glass with fellow runners at M. Special Brewing Company, a popular post-race gathering place. Validation Ale is another great stop for a fresh pour before the aroma of wood-fired pizza pulls you across the street to Lucky Penny, serving everything from classic cheese to spicy pies.

Afternoon

With the race behind you, slow the pace with a little recovery. Give sore legs a break by sinking into a filtered cold-water plunge at Soul Care Studio + Sauna. Pro tip: Add a Somadome session to your wellness routine, where guided meditation, soothing sounds and light therapy help you recharge. Your feet deserve just as much attention, and a revitalizing foot massage at Float Luxury Spa helps soothe tired muscles after miles on the course. Browse more spas in Santa Barbara.

Evening

End the day with a celebratory dinner at Opal Restaurant & Bar. The menu showcases fresh ingredients and global flavors, with standout dishes like salmon draped in Thai curry sauce served over orange-zested basmati rice. If you’re craving Italian, head to Olio e Limone Ristorante for house-made carbonara pasta and truffle oil-infused beef tenderloin.

Day 3

Morning

For your final day, take a scenic drive a few miles south of town to Montecito and Summerland, two coastal communities known for their relaxed seaside charm. Start with brunch in Montecito and try fluffy Belgian waffles at Jeannine’s American Bakery Restaurant, or take blueberry muffins and sour cream coffee cakes to go from Lilac Montecito. Once you’ve fueled up, wander through Casa del Herrero to see antiques, artwork and lush gardens while admiring Spanish Colonial Revival details like wrought-iron window grilles and colorful accents along stairways and tiled floors.

Afternoon

Before leaving Montecito, stop at Clark’s Oyster Bar for a buttered lobster roll. Then, head to Summerland to shop for books, home decor and more along Lillie Avenue at favorites like Godmothers and The Sacred Space. Pause for a coffee break at Field + Fort before browsing a few more boutiques. End the afternoon with a serene horseback ride on Summerland Beach with Los Padres Outfitters.

Evening

Cap off your weekend with an early dinner at Summerland’s longtime saloon, The Nugget. Settle into a leather booth surrounded by memorabilia and dig into comfort-food favorites like chicken parmesan and prime rib with au jus. After dinner, bid farewell to Santa Barbara by watching the sun sink into the Pacific at nearby Lookout Park
