Shopping

From oceanside surf shops to upscale boutiques and wellness stores, shopping in Santa Barbara is shaped by its neighborhoods. Each district offers its own pace, style and personality — whether you’re after one-of-a-kind finds, familiar labels or just a casual stroll with a coffee in hand.

Downtown Santa Barbara

Shopping in downtown Santa Barbara is all about historical buildings, wide sidewalks and shaded courtyards. The pedestrian-friendly streets are lined with Spanish Colonial architecture and filled with everything from small businesses to big brands. Window displays sit beneath red-clay roofs, surrounded by tile mosaics and trickling fountains in sunny plazas. State Street is a must-see stretch with weekly farmers markets and easy detours into hidden arcades. Nearby shopping destinations like Sevilla Square, Paseo Nuevo, La Arcada and La Cumbre Plaza offer plenty of opportunities to browse local boutiques, with even more shopping to explore farther up State Street in the ARTS District. Peruse an indie bookstore in the morning, grab lunch on a patio, then wander into a shop selling locally designed goods. If you’re looking for a full-day spree with sightseeing and people-watching, downtown is the place to go.

Funk Zone

Only a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean, the Funk Zone feels like an open-air studio — hyper-creative and constantly changing. Here, converted warehouses now brim with unique eateries, boutique wine bars and tasting rooms, plus curated shops selling art prints, apparel and other unexpected treasures. Colorful murals line walkable blocks, music’s usually playing and it’s easy to lose track of time discovering all the only-in-Santa-Barbara items. For those hunting for local flavor and a little bit of edge, this is one of the most distinctive Santa Barbara neighborhoods.

Waterfront & Stearns Wharf

By the waterfront, shopping is light, breezy and tied closely to the sea. Stores along Stearns Wharf, Cabrillo Boulevard and the Santa Barbara Harbor offer souvenirs, beach gear and plenty of Santa Barbara-made treats. You’ll hear the waves and smell salt in the air as you move from place to place. Painted wood signs, open doors and racks of beachwear invite casual browsing with a side of sunshine. This cool coastal area is all about fun, functional shopping just steps from the sand.

Montecito

Montecito brings quiet elegance to the Santa Barbara shopping experience. Along Coast Village  Road and the Upper Village, canopied sidewalks, mountain views and carefully curated storefronts lend the district a refined, almost retreat-like atmosphere. Stores here are smaller and more selective, with a focus on craftsmanship — whether it’s fashion, fragrance or decor. This is the neighborhood to visit when you’re in the mood to meander and leave with something that feels personal.

Summerland

South of the city, Summerland is compact and quirky, with antique finds, home decor and ocean views around every corner. Shopping in Summerland is more off-the-beaten-path — expect creaky wood floors, sea breezes through open doors and the occasional dog sleeping behind the register. If you’re looking for relaxed, low-pressure things to do, this is a great area to explore the city’s local character through its storefronts.
