Downtown Santa Barbara

No matter how many times you have visited Santa Barbara, the downtown area is as exciting as your first trip to California. Shops, boutiques, tantalizing eateries, and beautiful buildings surround you on all sides and are easily found by foot or the electric shuttle that runs the length of downtown on State Street. For those who are returning, you may have hit the highlights, but have you truly discovered the hidden gems just off the beaten path?

If you’ve already scoped out the stores and restaurants on State Street, veer off the main drag and take a short hike or elevator ride to the top of the Santa Barbara Courthouse watchtower, where you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the city and the quintessential red-tile rooftops that surround it. Use the maps at the top as your guide to exploring the city’s treasures and hideaway places of the downtown area.

Do a self-guided food tour of the Santa Barbara Public Market for bites of seafood, flavorful organic meals, and Asian fare. Or go on a proper foodie excursion with Taste Santa Barbara Food Tours or Santa Barbara Tasting Tours and savor the local cuisine of downtown State Street.

Looking for a little nightlife entertainment? Kick back with an intimate live concert performance at the Santa Barbara Bowl, watch a free movie during the summer months at the Sunken Gardens that surround the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse, or enjoy a live theater or musical performance at Granada Theatre. And if you’re in town on the first Thursday of the month, pick up a map at a participating business for the self-guided 1st Thursday art walk. Galleries and museums are open later and host receptions for their new exhibitions, and live performances take place in courtyards, shops and on street corners.
